ABSTRACT
Vesal
N, Mogheiseh A, Standing sedation using xylazine-morphine combination for flank ovariectomy
in a mare, Online J Vet Res., 15 (3): 249-255, 2011. An 8-year-old Arabian mare was
admitted for anoestrus and infertility of one year duration. Transrectal ultrasonographic
evaluation revealed an enlarged (approximately 8×7 cm),
honeycomb form left ovary and a small, static right ovary. Standing
flank ovariectomy was performed under a sedative
analgesic combination of xylazine-morphine and local anesthesia. The technique described
reliably produces adequate sedation and analgesia for Standing flank ovariectomy in the horse. Standing laparotomy was a
successful procedure and could be an alternative for horses that cannot undergo
general anesthesia due to health problems.
Key words: standing sedation, xylazine, morphine, ovariectomy, mare.
