Molecular identification of Pinctada oysters by mitochondrial DNA analysis

Yassien MH, Obata M, Abumourad MK, Komaru A., Molecular identification of Pinctada oysters by mitochondrial DNA analysis, Online J Bioinformatics, 11 (2): 317-326, 2010 P. fucata and radiata pearl oysters were differentiated through amplification of partial 16SrRNA and CO1 gene using primer sets. CO1 gene had the same nucleotide count (nt) for P. fucata and radiata (684 bp) with 660 bps and 2 open reading frames encoding a protein of 220 aa in P. fucata and 654 bp three open reading frames encoding a protein of 218 aa in radiata. P. fucata and P. radiata had 88.3 and 91.5% similarity, respectively, enabling this distinction. DNA analysis and PCR suggest that pinctada species are genetically different but belong to a same ancestor.
