ABSTRACT

Shukla MK Effect of progesterone ear implant on reproductive parameters in cattle, Online J Vet Res 10 (1):42-46, 2006. An experiment was conducted to study the effect of a norgestomet ear implant along with intramuscular injection of norgestomet and estradiol valerate (Syncro-Mate B), on reproductive performance of a Bos taurus X Bos indicus (HF X Sahiwal) crossbred herd in sub Himalayan terrains of India. Post partum anestrous animals with absence of ovarian activity were treated with Syncro-Mate B ear implant and intramuscular injection of norgestomet and estradiol valerate. Equal numbers of animals in a similar condition were left untreated to act as control. Remarkably higher per cent estrus induction in treatment (83.33 %) as compared to no response in control group in a mean duration of 43.5±6.02 h from implant withdrawal suggests efficacy of the implant in induction and synchronization of estrus. The percent of animals not inducted to estrus in treatment group (16.66 %) was significantly (P<0.01) lower than control (100 %). The service period of animals in the treatment group (108.5±31 days) was also significantly reduced as compared to control (183.5±38 days). Though significantly higher per cent of animals induced and synchronized to estrus suggests efficacy of the treatment in crossbred herd, the conception rate (41.66 %) was not very fascinating, which may be due to various factors which interplay to determine success of AI at natural and induced estrus.

Key words: Syncro-Mate B, norgestomet, estradiol valerate, crossbred cattle
