Introductory
The Communist Manifesto
By Karl Marx & Frederick Engels
*The* classic introduction to Marxism by its founders. The Manifesto
of the Communist Party was written just before the revolutions of 1848, as the public
expression of the ideas of the German Communist League, of which they were leading members.
Socialism: Utopian and Scientific By Frederick Engels
This very widely circulated pamphlet is taken from several chapters of a
longer book by Engels,
Anti-Duhring, in which Engels elaborates scientific socialism in a more rounded
form than before, and in doing so presents a critique of other left wing ideas, both
contemprorary to him, and in history. Perhaps suprisingly, many of the ideas of which Engels
is critical are present in various trends on the left today, which gives this book its
enduring relevance.
Reform or Revolution By Rosa Luxemburg
Luxemburg wrote this essential pamphlet in opposition to the important
theorist of reformist socialism, Eduard Bernstein, whose ideas became popular in the German
Socialist Party around the turn of the 19th Century. In this pamphlet, Luxemburg points out
that reformism is not just a different road to the same socialist end that revolutionaries
espouse, but a road to a different destination altogether.
The Two Souls of Socialism By Hal Draper
This discusses revolutionary Marxism in contrast to other schools of left
wing thought (including Stalinism, reformism and anarchism), explaining the common thread
of elitist ideas that run through every school that doesn't place the revolutionary
self-emancipation of the working class at its centre.
How Marxism Works By Chris Harman
This pamphlet has been widely used for many years as a basic pamphlet for
elementary discussion groups on our ideas. Available for the first time online...
Fighting for Women's Liberation
By Sandra Bloodworth
An excellent contemporary introduction to women's liberation.
What is the Real Marxist Tradition? By John Molyneux
In this pamphlet Molyneux discusses the differences between Stalinism,
reformism and classical Marxism, making a compelling case for the latter.
Socialism From Below By David McNally
McNally looks at the socialism of working class self emancipation.
