Note: Ratings wear the uniform color of the department to which they are assigned. There are rates which are typically assigned to specific departments, but two enlisted persons of the same rate serving with different departments will wear different uniform colors.

A common example of this is that medical ratings, corpsmen, serving with marine forces wear marine uniforms.

Note: Naval warrant officers wear officer uniforms without rank braid.
