Note: Since there can only be one ship's captain aboard Star Fleet vessels, the traditional Terran Marine rank "Captain" has been replaced by the rank "Lieutenant-Major" to avoid the necessity of the courtesy rank of "Major" to such officers on modern naval vessels. Lieutenant-Major is still company grade, not field grade.

Note 1: Warrants are sometimes granted to senior enlisted officers with an exceptional degree of specialization. These officers outrank all other non-commisioned officers. Warrant Officers are outranked by all comissioned officers. Note 2: Warrant officers are only used in the United Federation of Planets Star Fleet Navy.
