The Seven Great Disappointments

Of The World

  I

By the River Nile
See a Pyramid
A Big Rock Pile
Where a Body was hid

II

Halicarnassus's fame
Was a Tomb in Mausolos's name
Stone walls and wide aisles
In a confusion of styles
It stood by the port
Then rebuilt, as a fort
His remains? Never there
He was burnt to the air

  III

At Ephesus
For Artemis
An Edifice
Of Artifice
Was built up
And burnt down
And built up
And shaken down
And stayed down

  IV

The Hanging Gardens, Babylon
Caused many a Fool, to gabble on
It was, they insist, a mound of mud bricks
Built very high, and incredibly thick
Planted with trees for a Mountain King's Daughter
Supplied, for sure, with plenty of water

Now it seems, to me, that a mound of mud brick
Even built high, and incredibly thick
When watered profusely, becomes a mud slick

So the Hanging Gardens, Babylon
Were never there to look upon
And if they were, they were quite soon gone

V

Rodhos
Colossus.
Ascendent
Transcedent.
To tell
It soon fell.
The Lone
Prone
Great Wonder.
Experimental
Horizontal
Monumental.

Eventually ...
Sold for scrap.
Privitisation
For the Big Bronze Chap

  VI

There was once enshrined at Olympia
A massive, bejewelled statue of Zeus
Magnificent, it was, to gaze upon
But it was of no practical use.

  VII

At Pharos Isle did Ptolemy
A Lighthouse build by Royal Decree
And so It shone with Majesty
Until It fell into the Sea
