The Hive

The Hive was first performed circa 1990 at La Mama in Melbourne. It received the Victorian Premier's Literary Award for its year. It was subsequently adapted for radio and aired on ABC Radio National. An operatic version has been commissioned by ChamberMade Opera [Melbourne]. Composed by Nicholas Vines, it is likely to be produced in 2005

The play has been published by Currency Press in a compilation titled The La Mama Collection

The premiere season was directed by Rob Chuter from Performing Arts Productions and performed by David Treddinick, Rebecca Dontschuk, Louise Fox, Mark Stratford, Helen Mitchell, Mary-Beth Hayes, Kevin Hopkins and Christopher White.

The play is a liberal interpretation of the life [and afterlife] of the poet Rupert Brooke, spanning the era from 1900 to 1945. It investigates media hype and manipulation in its earliest incarnations.
